VETERAN Nollywood actor, Francis Duru, has died at the age of 57 after a brief illness, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans and the wider Nigerian creative community.
Duru’s family announced his death in the early hours of Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, in a statement posted on his official Instagram account.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness.
“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the family said.
The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abubakar Yakubu, also confirmed the actor’s death and described it as a major loss to the Nigerian creative industry.
Yakubu, in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), described Duru as “an iconic actor, a revered veteran and an exceptional practitioner,” saying his influence extended beyond his performances to mentorship and the development of younger practitioners.
“Beyond his remarkable performances, he was a mentor and inspiration to generations of practitioners. He nurtured emerging talents, leaving behind not only a remarkable body of work, but also a legacy of excellence, discipline and professionalism,” Yakubu said.
He added that Duru’s contribution to the growth of the Nigerian movie industry would remain a lasting reference point for practitioners.
“Indeed, Francis has written his name on the sands of time. His artistic legacy transcends generations,” the AGN president said, while praying for strength and comfort for the actor’s family.
In an earlier Instagram post announcing the death, Yakubu wrote: “Another great thespian gone….Rest in peace Francis Duru!!”
The actor’s death has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with fans recalling his memorable performances and colleagues mourning the loss of one of Nollywood’s established veterans.
Actor Kanayo O. Kanayo described Duru as a consummate actor and one of Nigeria’s most versatile and prolific performers.
“A consummate actor has left the stage. One of the most flexible, prolific performers Nigeria ever produced. Rest in peace, my brother,” Kanayo wrote.
Actress Kate Henshaw also mourned the actor, reflecting on the brevity of life and praying for his eternal rest and comfort for those he left behind.
Actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie said she was overwhelmed by the loss, writing, “Too tired and speechless about this loss.”
Stephanie Linus described Duru’s death as “tragic and heartbreaking,” while praying for strength for his family.
The tributes also came from fans who remembered Duru for the roles that made him a familiar face to generations of Nigerian movie audiences.
One fan described his death as a reminder of life’s uncertainty, while another recalled seeing him at a church in Abuja and described him as jovial and down-to-earth.
Others particularly remembered his portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s acclaimed 1995 film, Rattlesnake, a role that helped establish him as a prominent figure in the Nigerian film industry.
Duru, who was born on July 27, 1969, in Imo State, studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He began his career in the Nigerian movie industry in 1989 with Missing Mark before gaining wider recognition through Rattlesnake.
His career spanned more than three decades, during which he appeared in numerous Nollywood productions and earned several honours for his work.
In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
Beyond acting, Duru was involved in initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and education of African children, working with local and international non-governmental organisations.
In recognition of his positive influence on young people, he received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007.
His death comes months after he dismissed reports that he was battling a life-threatening illness.
In June, a video showing the actor looking frail circulated on social media, generating concern among fans and colleagues. Duru subsequently released a video on Instagram in which he described the footage as “fabricated and malicious” and insisted that he was not as ill as portrayed.
He thanked his fans for their concern and said he was determined to remain strong, accusing those behind the video of spreading negativity to drive online traffic.
Despite his earlier reassurance, news of his death on Friday has left colleagues and admirers mourning a performer whose career was closely associated with the formative years and evolution of Nollywood.
Duru’s death also comes about two years after the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, adding another painful chapter to the family’s recent history.
As tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond, colleagues and fans have remembered Duru not only for his performances on screen but also for his contribution to the growth of the Nigerian film industry and his influence on younger generations of practitioners. He is survived by his family.
