THE NIGERIA Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has described the death of Dotun Oladipo, veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, as a major loss to the media industry and the nation. Oladipo, 56, died on Tuesday, last week.

The NUJ, in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, expressed profound shock and sadness over the death of the journalist, describing him as a distinguished practitioner whose contributions to Nigerian journalism spanned several decades.

The union said Oladipo’s death came at a time when the journalism profession required courage, professionalism, integrity and a firm commitment to democratic values, adding that the industry had lost one of its dedicated practitioners and advocates.

Oladipo was a former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP). He was also a member of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) and the International Press Institute (IPI).

Before venturing fully into digital publishing, he had a distinguished career in mainstream journalism, including serving as Politics Editor of The Punch newspaper.

The NUJ said Oladipo distinguished himself through his commitment to credible journalism, public accountability and the advancement of the media profession.

As publisher of The Eagle Online, the union noted, he was at the forefront of the growth of digital journalism in Nigeria and demonstrated an understanding of the rapidly changing media landscape.

According to the NUJ, Oladipo played a significant role in strengthening online journalism and promoting digital platforms as important channels for informing citizens, holding institutions accountable and contributing to public discourse.

His tenure as president of GOCOP was also cited as evidence of his commitment to the professionalisation of online publishing and the promotion of responsible journalism.

The union said his leadership and advocacy reflected his belief in the capacity of the media to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development.

Similarly, the Managing Director of NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, described Oladipo’s death as a great loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the country.

Opeifa particularly highlighted the deceased’s contributions to political journalism and his efforts to improve standards within Nigeria’s emerging digital media sector.

He said Oladipo was instrumental in efforts to reposition the online media space in response to the activities of what he described as charlatans and people of questionable character, noting that the emergence and work of GOCOP contributed significantly to sanitising Nigeria’s digital media environment.

The NRC managing director described Oladipo’s professional career as a reflection of the important role journalists play in informing citizens, holding public officials accountable and providing a robust platform for public discourse.

He recalled Oladipo’s passion for journalism and his contributions to the growth of digital media, describing him as a critical thought leader and a game changer whose death had deprived the industry of an important voice.

“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation. He was a committed believer in Nigeria’s democracy and through his public discourse you can see through him as a patriot who loves and is willing to protect public causes,” Opeifa said.

He extended his condolences to Oladipo’s wife, children, family members, friends and colleagues, praying that God would grant the deceased eternal rest and give the bereaved family the strength to bear the loss.

The NUJ also extended its condolences to Oladipo’s immediate family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, members of GOCOP, professional associates, friends and colleagues.

Abdullahi said Oladipo’s significance to the profession went beyond his formal positions, describing him as a colleague, mentor, advocate and friend to many members of the media fraternity.

He said the journalist’s contributions would continue to resonate despite his passing.

“Dotun Oladipo’s voice may have been silenced, but his contributions to Nigerian journalism will continue to speak for him,” the NUJ president said.

The union urged the bereaved family to take solace in the legacy Oladipo left behind and the many lives he touched through his journalism, professional leadership and advocacy.

With his death, the Nigerian media has lost a veteran practitioner whose career cut across traditional newspaper journalism, political reporting and the country’s rapidly expanding digital media landscape.

Both the NUJ and NRC expressed confidence that his contributions to journalism, particularly political reporting and the development of responsible online publishing, would remain part of his enduring professional legacy.
