THE VICE Chancellor of Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), formerly Benue State University, Prof. Timothy Alabar, says the institution is grappling with inadequate student accommodation, unreliable electricity and water supply, ageing infrastructure and funding constraints.
Alabar, who made the disclosure on Monday in Makurdi while presenting his six-month scorecard, said that the institution is also faced with several other challenges.
The VC particularly identified inadequate accommodation as a major challenge, particularly with the growing student population and the need to rehabilitate existing hostels.
He also listed unreliable electricity and water supply as major concerns affecting hostels, lecture theatres, laboratories and other student facilities.
Alabar added that the increasing pressure on health and medical services required improved facilities, personnel and resources, while financial difficulties among students had become a concern amid rising educational and living costs.
The VC stated that inadequate Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, including unstable portal services, poor internet connectivity and the need to improve digital academic services, were hampering the school activities.
According to him, the university equally needs expanded recreational, sporting and social facilities to support students’ holistic development.
The VC also said that students’ increasing expectations for efficient administrative services, particularly the timely release of results and transcripts, had placed additional demands on the institution.
He listed promotion arrears and delays in the implementation of promotions, pension and retirement-related obligations, as well as medical welfare and assistance for staff facing serious health issues as great challenges.
He further stated that other staff-related challenges included inadequate accommodation, rehabilitation of staff quarters, recruitment of critical academic and non-teaching personnel, and funding for staff training, conferences, workshops and postgraduate development. (NAN)
