THE WAR involving Iran, the United States and its regional allies has entered a more dangerous phase, with fresh military strikes, growing intelligence concerns over Russia’s possible involvement, and attacks on Saudi oil tankers fuelling fears of a broader regional war and renewed volatility in global energy markets.

The latest escalation comes as U.S. intelligence agencies investigate whether Russia may have provided Iran with targeting information or advanced technical support used in recent drone attacks on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) facilities in the Gulf.

According to Reuters, investigators have yet to reach a definitive conclusion, but analysts are examining whether the precision of the strikes and Russia’s longstanding military cooperation with Tehran point to a deeper level of involvement.

The reported investigation follows Iranian drone attacks that struck multiple CIA-linked facilities in the Gulf region during the ongoing conflict.

Sources familiar with the intelligence assessment told Reuters that while there is currently no conclusive evidence directly implicating Moscow, analysts are studying whether Russian satellite intelligence, navigation technology or other forms of military assistance helped improve the accuracy of the attacks.

The Kremlin has not publicly accepted any role in the attacks, while previous reports have documented expanding military cooperation between Russia and Iran, particularly in drone and missile technology since the outbreak of the Ukraine war.

Analysts say confirmation of direct Russian assistance would significantly complicate already strained relations between Washington and Moscow.

        Houthis Open Another Front

As questions surrounding the intelligence operation continue, the conflict has expanded dramatically to one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, identifying the vessels as Encelia and Layla.

The group said the strikes formed part of what it described as a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities confirmed that one of the vessels caught fire after being struck near the port of Jizan.

The attacks mark a significant escalation because they threaten traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

Energy analysts warn that any sustained disruption at Bab el-Mandeb, combined with instability around the Strait of Hormuz, could severely affect global crude oil exports, increase shipping costs and disrupt international trade.

Around seven per cent of global oil supplies transit the Bab el-Mandeb route, making it one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

Shipping companies have already begun rerouting some vessels to avoid the area, while war-risk insurance premiums for ships operating in the southern Red Sea have reportedly risen sharply following the attacks.

        U.S. Warns of Military Response

The attacks prompted a sharp response from U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that Iran would face “major military punishment” if further attacks were carried out by the Houthis, whom Washington considers an Iranian proxy.

The U.S. military has continued air strikes against Iranian targets, while Tehran has responded with attacks targeting U.S. military installations and assets in neighbouring countries hosting American forces, underscoring the increasingly regional nature of the conflict.

According to Reuters, intelligence sources also said Iran recently transferred Revolutionary Guard commanders, military advisers and missile- and drone-related equipment to Yemen before the Houthis announced their blockade, although the Houthi movement has denied receiving operational direction from Tehran.

        Oil prices surge

Financial markets reacted swiftly to the deteriorating security environment.

Brent crude climbed above $100 per barrel, recording one of its sharpest gains since the conflict intensified, as traders worried that simultaneous disruptions in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb could constrain global oil supplies.

Analysts say the market is increasingly pricing in geopolitical risk rather than actual supply shortages, warning that prolonged attacks on shipping infrastructure could further increase fuel costs worldwide.

        Implications for Nigeria

For Nigeria, Africa’s largest crude oil producer, sustained higher international oil prices could potentially increase government oil revenues and foreign exchange earnings if production levels remain stable.

However, economists caution that any prolonged rise in global crude prices may also increase the cost of importing refined petroleum products, aviation fuel and industrial inputs, potentially adding inflationary pressure to Africa’s largest economy.

Maritime experts also note that continued disruption of international shipping routes could affect freight costs and supply chains, with possible consequences for imports into West Africa.

Diplomatic observers say the coming days will be critical as Washington investigates the alleged Russian connection while weighing its response to the expanding Houthi campaign in the Red Sea. Confirmation of direct Russian military assistance to Iran would represent another major geopolitical flashpoint in an already volatile international security environment.
