THE CONFLICT between the United States and Iran intensified on Tuesday after Tehran claimed responsibility for a fresh wave of attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz while the US pressed ahead with a tenth consecutive round of military strikes, heightening concerns over regional security and global energy supplies.

According to Iranian officials, the latest operations targeted vessels transiting the strategic waterway, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

One tanker was reportedly struck, forcing its crew to abandon the vessel, while separate attacks were also claimed against US military facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan as Iran broadened its retaliatory campaign against American and allied interests.

The escalation came as Washington confirmed it had carried out another night of strikes against Iranian military infrastructure, saying the operations were aimed at weakening Tehran’s ability to threaten international shipping and regional allies.

US officials have maintained that the campaign is designed to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz after repeated attacks on commercial vessels.

The Pentagon also acknowledged that nearly 100 US service members have been injured during recent Iranian reprisals, with most suffering minor concussion-related injuries.

Three American personnel have reportedly been killed since the latest phase of the conflict began, underscoring the growing human cost of the confrontation.

The maritime crisis widened further after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement announced a blockade targeting Saudi Arabia’s shipping through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The group said the measure was retaliation for what it described as Saudi Arabia’s long-running blockade of Yemen, raising fears that disruptions could spread across another critical global trade corridor.

Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has continued to decline as security risks mount. Industry data indicated that vessel traffic fell sharply, with no very large crude carriers or liquefied natural gas tankers recorded in recent crossings.

Maritime security agencies have also reported additional attacks involving projectiles and drones on commercial vessels operating in the Gulf and nearby waters.

Beyond the military confrontation, the conflict is increasingly affecting civilian infrastructure across the Gulf. Reports indicated that desalination facilities and power plants in Kuwait were damaged in continuing attacks, while fires were reported for a fourth consecutive day, highlighting the growing regional impact of the hostilities.

Despite the escalating violence, diplomatic efforts have not completely stalled. Iranian officials are continuing discussions with mediators in Pakistan in an attempt to salvage an interim agreement with the United States, although prospects for a breakthrough appear increasingly uncertain amid the continuing exchange of military strikes.

The deteriorating security situation has heightened international concern over the stability of Middle East energy exports and the risk that the conflict could draw additional regional actors into a broader confrontation. Analysts warn that sustained disruptions in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea could have significant consequences for global oil markets and international trade.
