GOVERNOR Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has expressed his administration’s commitment towards tackling the current security challenges in the state.
Mutfwang said this when the students of the Senior Course 48 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State, visited him on Tuesday in Jos.
The governor, who decried the resurgence of attacks on peaceful communities, described the security challenges in the state as a pure act of terrorism.
He added that the killings had denied many residents their means of livelihoods, particularly farmers who are usually attacked on their farms.
Mutfwang, who commended the efforts of the military towards tackling the security challenges in the state, called for more drastic steps in that regard.
“We have seen that the challenges of insecurity on the Plateau have a direct correlation to the poverty index in our state.
“It is not just about military warfare, but economic warfare as well; it is intended to keep the people in perpetual poverty at a very rudimentary level.
“Ordinary farmers cannot go to farms and it therefore becomes imperative that we must do all we can to secure the lives and properties of our people.
“We must give them the enabling environment to be able to go about productive activities that enhance the prosperity of their own lives and their families,”he said.
The governor called on the military to use both kinetic and non kinetic approaches in tackling the security challenges confronting the nation.
He promised to continually support the military and other security agencies towards ensuring a peaceful and virile Plateau.
Earlier, Commodore O.A. Oshatuberu, who led the students on the visit, said the students were in Plateau for a study and environmental tour.
Oshatuberu said that students, comprising international participants, are senior officers, particularly those who attained the rank of major.
He said that the 2026 course had the theme “Promoting Community Engagement for Enhance National Security and Prosperity”.
“The objective of the senior course is to develop these officers for higher command and staff appointments.
“This means when they leave the college, they are going for higher commands,” he said
Oshatuberu explained that the students were in Plateau to ascertain the nexus between insecurity and development, and come up with workable solutions.
The team lead, who commended the Mutfwang for the steady developmental stride in face of security challenges, promised the support of the military to end the menace. (NAN)
