AN EAR, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon has urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to conduct ear screening and thorough medical examination on candidates before employment.
Dr Nse-Obong Undie, the Chief Consultant, ENT Surgeon at the National Hospital Abuja (NHA), made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
The expert, who stressed the need for such screening, added that the examination would serve as evidence for future emergencies.
She said “employees should also have a copy of the result of the examination done during the employment phase to serve as evidence for any future emergencies.
“Employers should know that these things may eventually cause problems; the best thing would have been for them to have pre-employment check of the hearing status of everyone.
“The public should know that there are jobs that are potentially dangerous to the ears, like the army, where the officer will be asked to go to the shooting range. Insist that they give you ear muffs and use it to cover your ears.
“This is because when someone develops problems and complains, the defence would be, we didn’t know that you had any problems before employment and may not take responsibility for it.”
The surgeon also urged people working at the airplane tarmac to protect their ears to avoid damage.
She explained that “musicians also need to protect their ears when they play very loud
in their cubicles.”
Undie called for collaboration between organisations and ENT doctors to ensure better ear health. (NAN)
