A COALITION of friends, colleagues, and comrades will gather at BON Elvis Hotel in Wuse 2, Abuja, on April 29, 2026, to honour the life and legacy of the late Comrade (Prof) Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed, an unyielding patriot and socialist stalwart who died on December 11, 2025.
The event, which combines a symposium and a book launch, seeks to document Mohammed’s decades-long struggle for academic freedom, gender equality, and the rights of ordinary Nigerians.
“By documenting his struggles and advancing the discourse on justice and development, we ensure that his rich engagements continue to inspire the hope of making Nigeria a better country,” said Y.Z. Ya’u in a statement on behalf of the organising committee.
The symposium, themed: “Scholars and the Social Question in Nigeria: Reflections on the Life of A.S. Mohammed,” will be chaired by Senator (Dr) Yahaya Abdullahi. The panel includes Dr Yusuf Bangura, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, Prof. Aliyah Adamu Ahmad, and Dr Julie Sanda.
The centrepiece of the gathering is the formal presentation of Mohammed’s major original work, The Satiru Revolt of Peasants and Slaves in Sokoto, 1906, which examines a peasant uprising against the feudal aristocracy of the Sokoto Caliphate and British colonial forces.
Former governor of Sokoto State, Mal. Yahaya Abdulkarim, will chair the book launch, with a critical review by Prof. M.J. Kuna, while Dr J. Maina will deliver a biographical tribute highlighting Mohammed’s roles in the Movement for Progressive Nigeria, the anti-apartheid movement, Women in Nigeria, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
All proceeds from the book launch, the statement said, will support an endowment fund for Mohammed’s family and the causes he championed.
The statement also invites the general public, members of the academic community, civil society, labour unions, and the media to the event which will begin at 9am at BON Elvis Hotel, 2 Monrovia Street, Wuse 2, Abuja.
