- Family Details Harrowing Ordeal
THE FAMILY of Barrister Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo has confirmed her death following an abduction in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday, January 5, 2026.
According to a statement issued by her family, signed by Ms Maureen Chigbo, the incident began while the legal practitioner was on a phone call with her sister.
The call was interrupted, and upon reconnecting, signs of a struggle were heard before the line went dead and became unreachable.
After the family made repeated attempts to contact her, a male voice eventually answered her phone, demanding a ransom of three million naira and issuing threats. The kidnappers provided no further instructions for payment.
The family immediately alerted authorities, contacting the office of the Inspector General of Police, the FCT Police Commissioner, and the Commander of the specialised Scorpion Squad.
Police assured the family that a tracking operation was in progress.
During subsequent attempts by the family to reach the kidnappers via the lawyer’s phone, they reported hearing her screaming in distress before communication ceased entirely.
Police authorities maintained contact with the family throughout the night. In the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, the Commander of the Scorpion Squad informed the family that a critically injured woman had been located and taken to a specialist hospital in Abuja.
Upon arrival from Lagos, the victim’s sister, Maureen Chigbo, the immediate past President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), identified Barrister Nwamaka’s body in the mortuary, bearing visible signs of severe physical trauma.
The late Barrister Princess Nwamaka Chigbo was an active member of the legal community, serving as a former treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (Abuja) and a member of several professional associations including the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
She was also a devoted Catholic, author, and held leadership roles in several church societies.
The statement revealed that the Chigbo family has met with police officials, who have assured them that an investigation is ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
The family expressed gratitude for the police’s cooperation and the outpouring of support from friends, colleagues, and well-wishers.
The family said funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later date.
