Brazil, France, Russia, South Africa, Others Condemn U.S. Military Action In Venezuela

A SWIFT and forceful wave of international condemnation followed a unilateral U.S. military operation in Venezuela on Saturday, which resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, with world leaders decrying the act as a violation of sovereignty and a perilous escalation.

The crisis began when U.S. President Donald Trump announced the attack and the deposing of Maduro, marking Washington’s most direct military intervention in Latin America in over three decades.

The move triggered immediate diplomatic shockwaves.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a longstanding critic of external intervention in Venezuela, led the regional rebuke. He condemned the strike as crossing an “unacceptable line” and a “grave affront to Venezuela’s sovereignty.”

“These acts represent… yet another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community,” President Lula stated on social media platform X.

He called for a “vigorous” response from the United Nations and reiterated Brazil’s offer to mediate, having previously warned that armed intervention would be a “humanitarian catastrophe.”

Brazilian officials convened an emergency cabinet meeting, while the head of the Federal Police confirmed Venezuela had closed its border with Brazil, a critical crossing point for refugees.

The criticism extended globally. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot declared that the US operation violated “the principle of not resorting to force, that underpins international law.” He emphasized that “no lasting political solution can be imposed from the outside.”

Russia, a key ally of the Maduro government, issued a formal statement urging the U.S. to release the detained president and his wife. “We strongly urge the American leadership to reconsider its position and release the legally elected president of a sovereign country,” the Russian foreign ministry asserted.

From Africa, South Africa called for an urgent session of the United Nations Security Council, labelling the U.S. action a “manifest violation of the Charter of the United Nations.”

Echoing these concerns at the highest level, United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm.

His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said the Secretary-General views “these developments [as] a dangerous precedent” and is “deeply concerned that the rules of international law have not been respected.”

The international response underscores a profound rift over the U.S. action, framing it not as a liberation but as a breach of foundational international norms.

As Venezuela’s borders seal and global capitals scramble to respond, the incident threatens to precipitate a severe diplomatic crisis centred on the principles of sovereignty and the prohibitions on the use of force.
