NIGERIA’s drive towards HIV epidemic control is increasingly being framed as a workforce and economic imperative, as the Action to Sustain Precision and Integrated HIV Response Towards Epidemic Control (ASPIRE) Project records steady gains in Rivers State.

By reducing new infections and supporting people living with HIV to remain healthy and productive, the project is helping to protect livelihoods and strengthen the nation’s human capital.

The Project Director, Dr. Stanley Idakwo, told National Record that achieving HIV epidemic control is a critical national priority, not only for saving lives but also for sustaining productivity, strengthening communities, and stabilizing Nigeria’s health and development systems. He noted that a healthier workforce translates into improved livelihoods, stronger economic growth, and long-term national development.

Dr. Idakwo added that the progress recorded in Rivers State and other ASPIRE-supported areas is already easing the burden of HIV across key sectors, including agriculture, technology, and healthcare, allowing workers to contribute more fully to Nigeria’s development.

Dr. Idakwo said the benefits of HIV epidemic control extend across all sectors, leading to higher productivity, reduced healthcare costs, and a stronger, more skilled workforce. These gains, he noted, would not only drive economic growth but also help position Nigeria to meet its long-term development goals.

Beyond economic gains, he said the social impact would be equally significant. Healthier families would face less financial strain, and fewer children would be orphaned. Drawing from IHVN’s community outreach under the ASPIRE Project, Dr. Idakwo observed that stigma and discrimination are steadily declining as more people gain access to testing, treatment, and accurate information.

He explained that ASPIRE promotes inclusivity and social cohesion, particularly among children and adolescents, where the burden of HIV continues to fall. In Rivers State, more children are staying in school and reaching their full potential, while women — who are often disproportionately affected by HIV — are gaining greater stability and opportunity.

According to Dr. Idakwo, removing HIV as a major public health threat is also reshaping social attitudes and behaviors. As the disease is no longer seen as a death sentence, communities are adopting healthier practices and relationships. He said an HIV-free Nigeria would ultimately be more resilient, hopeful, and united.

Supported by PEPFAR through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the ASPIRE Project works across four Nigerian states to advance HIV epidemic control by strengthening laboratory systems, expanding prevention and treatment services, improving quality of care, and delivering comprehensive, community-based support.

Identified as a state with low saturation of HIV services, Rivers State became a priority for action. The intervention began in 2019 to tackle the high prevalence and unmet healthcare needs.
