GOVERNOR Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has pledged government support, including scholarship schemes, for the children of security personnel and other citizens who lost their lives defending Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty.
The Governor made the promise on Wednesday in Makurdi during the state’s commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. He paid tribute to what he described as the “ultimate sacrifice” of fallen heroes, assuring that their families would not be abandoned.
In his address from the government house, Makurdi made available to journalists by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor said, “we also pay heartfelt tribute to our fallen heroes, military and civilians, who gave their lives in defence of our freedom. May their souls rest in peace. To those still in active service, we thank you. You remain the shield of our sovereignty. We pray for your protection and strength,” Alia said.
The governor noted that his administration’s ongoing reforms in education would also cater for such children through targeted interventions. He highlighted the renovation of over 350 schools and the employment of more than 9,000 teachers as part of his strategies to make education more accessible.
Alia further stated that the government was also implementing reforms in health, infrastructure, agriculture, ICT training, and industrialisation to build a stronger and more inclusive state. He added that despite economic difficulties, the sacrifices of fallen heroes should inspire Nigerians to remain united and resilient.
“Freedom is not just a gift; it is a responsibility. It demands our unity, our resilience, and our faith in tomorrow,” he said.
The Independence Day celebration in Makurdi was low-key as it was not marked with parades and cultural displays which accompanied Independence Day events in the past.
