Questions Trail Army’s Claim Of Rescuing Two Immigration Officers In Benue

WHEN the Nigerian Army announced on September 26, 2025 that its troops had rescued two abducted immigration officers in Benue State, the story was presented as a decisive triumph against criminality in the troubled state. The officers, David Iorwuese James and Orasuur Oliver, were said to have been freed after soldiers under Operation Whirl Stroke stormed villages in Ukum LGA, forcing the kidnappers to flee and abandon their captives, according to Sahara Reporters.

On the surface, it was a straightforward success story. Yet, as with many such claims in Nigeria, closer scrutiny reveals unanswered questions and a wave of public scepticism.

Reports of the abduction had surfaced more than a week earlier. By September 18, several outlets were already reporting that the kidnappers had demanded ten million naira each for the release of the officers, which placed their capture somewhere between the 15th and 18th of September. Their eventual release on September 26 means they spent at least eight to eleven days in captivity. The abductors were releasing videos of their captives on camera via social media on a daily basis.

The Army’s statement, however, was silent on the earlier ransom demand and offered no detail beyond citing “credible intelligence” as the basis for the operation.

According to the military, troops stormed Tse Tembe and Adamawa Village in Ukum and, upon seeing them, the abductors abandoned their victims and escaped into the bush. No suspects were arrested, no weapons recovered, and no accounts were offered to show whether a firefight occurred.

It was an account that left more questions than answers. Nigerians familiar with the modus operandi of armed kidnappers found the story unconvincing. On social media, reactions ranged from cautious praise for the troops to outright skepticism.

Some noted that ruthless gangs rarely let their victims go when threatened by rescue attempts, often killing hostages rather than retreating. Others suggested the Army was exaggerating the success, a common suspicion whenever security agencies announce such rescues.

The most contentious issue is whether ransom was paid. The earlier demand for ten million naira each was widely reported, but neither the Army nor the Nigerian Immigration Service has addressed whether money changed hands before the supposed rescue.

Families of kidnap victims in Nigeria often quietly negotiate settlements, while official statements deny such transactions. In this case, the military’s silence is not enough to dismiss the possibility that ransom played a role, especially since no evidence of a firefight or arrest was presented.

What remains clear is that the two officers regained their freedom after several days in captivity, but the manner of their release remains clouded.

Without firsthand testimony from the victims, confirmation from their families, or further details from the authorities, doubts will persist about whether the kidnappers were truly chased off by superior firepower or whether negotiations and payments were quietly involved.

In a country where trust in security agencies is already fragile, the lack of clarity does little to restore public confidence.

Until the questions of how, and at what cost, the immigration officers were freed are answered, the story of their rescue will remain as much a subject of speculation as of celebration.
