THE CHIEF Medical Director of the Moses Orshio Adasu University Teaching Hospital ((MOAUM) Makurdi (formerly Benue State University Teaching Hospital), Dr Stephen Hwande, has disclosed that the hospital successfully conducted over 40 emergency surgeries within 48 hours on victims of the recent Yelwata massacre.
Speaking during an interview in Makurdi, Dr Hwande said the surgeries were performed on individuals who sustained life-threatening injuries during the attack that claimed over 200 lives.
He described the swift response as a testament to the improved capacity of the teaching hospital under Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.
“We thank God that we were able to contain the situation and save lives. Over 40 of the injured persons had surgeries within two days. Many of them were bleeding internally, and you know that internal bleeding can be fatal within hours, as the human body holds just about five litres of blood,” Hwande explained.
He attributed the hospital’s rapid and effective intervention to recent upgrades and support received from the state government. “We must thank Governor Alia for equipping this hospital. His administration’s support helped us to manage such a large-scale trauma emergency,” he said.
The CMD appreciated the President’s recent condolence visit to Benue State, which he said offered a measure of hope to victims’ families and the larger community.
He expressed optimism that the visit would bring lasting peace to troubled local government areas, including Gwer West, Guma, Ukum, Katsina-Ala, Logo, Kwande, and parts of Makurdi.
Hwande further called on Benue political stakeholders to unite in support of the current administration for the overall development of the state.
He noted that Benue will mark its 50th anniversary in February 2026 and urged reflection on the state’s progress.
“When you look at a 50-year-old, he’s nearing retirement. So, we must ask: what have we achieved in those 50 years? Past leaders should support the current Governor instead of creating political divisions. Everyone must unite to place Benue where it truly belongs among the community of states,” he added.
He cited improvements in primary education, healthcare, agriculture, transportation, security, and road infrastructure as key areas of progress that deserve collective support.
