TENSION flared last Thursday in Agan, a community on the outskirts of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, as angry youths set fire to the residence of Hon. Alfred Emberga Berga, the member representing Makurdi North State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly.
The incident occurred following a deadly attack on Tse-Orjime Village, allegedly carried out by suspected herders.
Agan is located approximately 11 kilometers from Wurukum Roundabout in central Makurdi.
While the Benue State Police Command stated that its officers intervened and prevented the house from being completely burnt, viral images on Facebook showed flames and thick smoke surrounding the building.
In a statement issued to journalists, the then State Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Sewuese Anene, confirmed the attack and subsequent unrest.
“On 29/05/2025 at about 1800hrs, information was received about an attack at Tse Orjime, Mbalagh council ward, Makurdi. Police teams within the area responded immediately and pursued the attackers into the bush.
“Simultaneously, youths in the area mobilized and attempted to burn down the house of Hon. Alfred Berga, the member representing the area in the State House of Assembly. They were resisted by the police,” Anene said
Anene added that three bodies, believed to be victims of the attack, were recovered and taken to the General Hospital in Makurdi suburb of North Bank while investigations continue.
This incident reflects a growing trend in the state, where frustrated youths have targeted the homes of political leaders and public property in response to repeated attacks by armed groups.
“Similar incidents have been recorded in Ukum and Gwer West LGA over the past year.
Residents accuse their leaders of failing to address persistent herder-related violence and banditry in their communities.
