THE YOBE State Government has initiated a specialized training program for 450 newly employed teachers to enhance their professional skills in alignment with global standards.
The Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Goni Tongo Betara, announced this during the opening ceremony of a two-day workshop held in Damaturu on Wednesday.
He stated that the training was organized in collaboration with his office and the Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua.
Titled “From Classroom to Career: Essential Training for New Teachers in Yobe State,” the program commenced on Tuesday, drawing participants from across the state.
Betara emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s strategic efforts to revitalize the education sector and improve service delivery in line with the current administration’s vision.
“Education in Yobe has suffered significantly due to insurgency, resulting in the destruction of school infrastructure and the loss of teachers,” Betara noted.
He recalled that upon assuming office in 2019, Governor Mai Mala Buni convened an education summit, which led to key reforms, including the establishment of an Education Trust Fund.
Other interventions include the construction of mega schools, promotion of girl-child education, support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), school feeding programs, provision of modern learning materials, free tuition, and environmental reforms.
“This administration is committed to repositioning education to meet global standards,” he affirmed.
The Head of Service further highlighted that the workshop aims to equip new teachers with modern pedagogical techniques, stressing the importance of punctuality, active participation, and collaboration during the sessions.
“Teachers must be adequately prepared to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of education in Yobe,” he added.
In his remarks, Dr. AbdulRahman Danladi, Provost of Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua, commended the state government for its dedication to educational development.
“We appreciate Governor Mai Mala Buni for facilitating this workshop and acknowledging the critical role of teacher training in transforming the education sector,” Danladi stated. He emphasized that teaching extends beyond lesson delivery, describing it as a profession requiring continuous training, motivation, planning, assessment, and mentorship.
Participants will undergo training on key topics, including the role of teachers in the 21st century, essential qualities of effective teaching, lesson planning, classroom management, teaching methodologies, and professional ethics. Danladi urged attendees to actively engage with master trainers to maximize the program’s benefits.
One of the participants, Malam Bukar Bulama, expressed gratitude to the organizers, describing the training as timely and impactful.
“This workshop will significantly enhance teacher performance, thereby improving student learning outcomes,” Bulama remarked.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop, which began on Wednesday, will conclude on Thursday. According to Betara, the initiative is part of the Buni administration’s broader agenda to rebuild and strengthen the state’s educational infrastructure. (NAN)
