        • Cleric Calls On Journalists To Uphold Truth And Accuracy

        By Amos Aar

THE CHAIRMAN of the Benue State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, has expressed concern over the rising number of journalists imprisoned worldwide, disclosing that at least 1,000 media professionals are currently incarcerated despite global recognition of press freedom.

Comrade Ugber revealed this on Sunday during a thanksgiving service at Glory of His Majesty Ministries in Makurdi, held to mark the 2025 World Press Freedom Week.

He noted that 75 of the detained journalists are Nigerians, highlighting the persistent threats and challenges faced by media practitioners, including those in Benue State.

“Many of our colleagues have lost their lives in the line of duty. Others are in prison, while some have endured harassment, violence, and intimidation — all for speaking truth to power and amplifying the voices of the marginalized,” Ugber stated.

He explained that the gathering was an opportunity to express gratitude for the safety of journalists who continue their work despite risks and to seek divine protection as they fulfill their constitutional duties.

“Despite the challenges, we remain committed to informing the public and upholding democracy,” Ugber affirmed, thanking the church for its spiritual support.

In his remarks, the Senior Pastor of Glory of His Majesty Ministries, Evangelist Michael Ewache, described journalists as “watchmen of society,” entrusted with upholding truth and justice. Quoting John 8:32, he said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free,” emphasizing that truth is both a spiritual and professional obligation for journalists.

“Do not silence your voice for convenience,” Evangelist Ewache urged. “Remain courageous, accurate, and fair. Your words influence nations and empower the voiceless. Your mission is divine, and your protection comes from God, especially when state actors target you for exposing the truth.”

He called on the church to support journalists through prayer and encouragement rather than indifference.

Earlier in his sermon, the cleric declared May a month of open doors and spiritual breakthroughs, urging believers to remain steadfast in faith. He cautioned that a lack of opposition could indicate spiritual stagnation.

The Benue State NUJ Council will conclude the week-long observance on Monday, May 5, with a public lecture titled “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of AI on Press Freedom and Media.”The event will take place at the NUJ House in Makurdi by 3 PM.
