MAKURDI, the Benue State capital, has been engulfed in a surge of violent clashes between rival cult groups, resulting in at least seven fatalities and multiple injuries over the past week.
According to anonymous sources familiar with the situation, the unrest began when members of a black cult faction allegedly killed rival cultists in the North Bank area of Makurdi.
In retaliation, the opposing group reportedly targeted the leader of the black cult, Raphael Ikyav, widely known as “Don Spanner,” on Wednesday.
Spanner, a notorious figure with alleged political affiliations, was killed at his shop along Akpehe Road, near Wurukum Market.
Prior to his death, he held several political roles, including serving as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Leader for the Nõngov axis in Guma LGA and as Central Youth Leader for Makurdi and Guma LGAs.
Escalation of Violence
Following Spanner’s killing, his associates reportedly convened at his residence opposite the Oxynet Pure Water Company, allegedly planning a reprisal attack.
However, rival cultists from North Bank preemptively struck on Sunday night, killing seven members of Spanner’s group and leaving several others critically injured. Some victims are currently receiving medical treatment.
Conflicting reports suggest an alternate version of events, wherein Spanner’s loyalists were the aggressors, allegedly killing seven opponents in an act of vengeance before his burial.
Political Connections and Public Concern
Local residents have linked the escalation of cult-related violence to the alleged patronage of thugs by politicians.
It was noted that several cult members, including the late Spanner, had previously served as bodyguards and enforcers for political figures.
These groups were reportedly involved in high-profile incidents, including confrontations during the state government’s attempt to remove Justice Maurice Ikpambese.
Additionally, they were accused of assaulting prominent politicians, such as Hon. Asema Achado, Member of the House of Representatives for Gwer/Gwer West, at public events and burials.
The ongoing violence has heightened security concerns in Makurdi, with calls for authorities to address the root causes of cultism and its alleged political entanglements.
Further investigations are expected as tensions remain high in the region.
