THE MAKURDI underpass project, a key infrastructure initiative under Governor Alia’s administration, is scheduled for commissioning on May 29, 2025, coinciding with the governor’s second anniversary in office.

Bauhaus Global’s Project Manager, Engr. Charbel Al-Ammar, confirmed the timeline during an interview with journalists in Makurdi on Thursday. He stated that the project is currently 80–88% complete.

Initially awarded for a 12-month duration, the project faced minor delays due to technical challenges.

“We are targeting May for completion and handover,” Al-Ammar said, dismissing claims that the delay stemmed from contractor incompetence.

He cited a high-water table, soft soil conditions, and spatial constraints as major obstacles encountered between March and November last year.

“These were technical issues, not incompetence. Proper ground reinforcement was necessary to ensure long-term structural stability,” he explained.

Regarding drainage, Al-Ammar assured that surface drainages would be connected by Friday, April 25, with underpass drainage to follow after ongoing filling works. The system will link to an existing outlet, pending a future contract for an expanded drainage channel.

Safety measures, including lighting and one-meter-high precast parapets, will be installed upon completion of pavement works.

Addressing concerns over local employment, Al-Ammar stated that over 70% of the workforce is from Benue State, though the company retains its core technical team. He also dismissed claims of poor road diversion management, urging patience from residents.

Compensation for affected businesses and residents is being handled by the Ministry of Works, he noted, while declining to disclose the project’s cost.

The underpass, designed with a 50-year lifespan and a two-year maintenance clause, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in Makurdi upon completion.
