THE NEW Comptroller of Seme Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Dr Benedict Oramalugo, says customs operations started during the colonial era in the ancient town of Badagry.
Oramalugo disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, in his palace on Friday.
According to him, between 1736 and 1851, Badagry was a major commercial centre in the whole of Yoruba land.
“Then, there was a culture of toll system according to a book written by Prof. Toyin Falola titled: The Yoruba Toll System: Its Operation and Abolition.
“In Badagry, during the colonial period when European merchants are leaving after successful trading, they pay toll to traditional rulers.
“These monies were used to take care of people. Collecting tolls was the job of the customs then.
“So, anybody that tells you that customs operations started after colonisation is lying.
“Collection of tolls started in Badagry and this is one of the three major operations of the Nigeria Customs,” he said.
The controller described Badagry as a citadel of civilisation and western education.
“When I was posted to Seme Area Command, Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi told me to visit the Akran of Badagry to receive royal blessings.
“I want to thank you for giving me audience and allowing me to enter the palace today,” he said.
Responding, Akran of Badagry said the presence of the controller was a testament to the importance of the border town.
Akran, who was represented by Chief Hunkanlin Afolabi, the Zonlin Gbedudugan of Badagry Kingdom and Secretary to King Akran’s royal council, said Seme Badagry border was a significant contributor to the nation’s revenue through customs duties.
“However, we humbly request that you consider the plight of our people.
“The deplorable state of our roads to the border, the darkness of the border town and the absence of industries have left our youth with limited opportunities.
“This has led some of our youths to engage in smuggling out of necessity rather than malice.
“We understand the critical role of the Customs Service in enforcing laws and securing our borders.
“Nonetheless, we implore you to temper justice with mercy, recognising that our youth are not inherently criminal but rather victims of circumstance.
“We believe that with your support and understanding, we can work together to create alternatives that will uplift our community and foster a more prosperous future,” he said.
Akran assured him of fruitful discussions and a harmonious working relationship, promising that the council would see him for further discussion.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the controller also received royal blessings and assurance from the Onibereko of Ibereko land, Oba Israel Okoya, when he paid a courtesy call to his palace. (NAN)
