Bleak Christmas/New Year: Nigerians Struggle To Celebrate Amid Economic Hardships

THIS YEAR, the festive bells toll not in celebration but as a grim reminder of the worsening economic crisis gripping Nigeria. For many families, the joy of Christmas has been replaced by the struggle to make ends meet.

With inflation soaring to a staggering 34.6%, the highest in 28 years, and the naira’s value plummeting, even the most basic necessities have become a luxury.

In a season traditionally marked by abundance and gratitude, Nigerians are left wondering how to salvage a sense of cheer amid the financial storm.

The 2024 Christmas season has been anything but merry for most Nigerians. The unrelenting rise in the cost of food and goods has stretched household budgets to the breaking point.

Essential items like rice, cooking oil, and chicken – staples of the holiday feast – are now prohibitively expensive. Even families accustomed to modest celebrations are finding it challenging to uphold this established tradition.

Markets, once bustling with eager shoppers, have seen a significant decline in activity. Many Nigerians have resorted to buying in smaller quantities or delaying their purchases, hoping for price drops that never happen. For some, the festive spirit has been reduced to a simple prayer for survival.

In their desperation, many have turned to charity events as a last resort for Christmas sustenance. However, these gatherings have sometimes led to tragic outcomes.

This year, at least 67 people, including children, lost their lives in stampedes at charity distributions across the country.

These heartbreaking incidents highlight the dire circumstances many Nigerians face, where even the promise of free food becomes a life-threatening pursuit.

The economic hardship has also fueled growing discontent among citizens. Protests against the rising cost of living and perceived government inaction have become more frequent, with movements like “End Bad Governance” gaining traction.

The government, for its part, has introduced measures like criminalising the export of unprocessed corn to address food shortages, but these efforts have yet to bring significant relief.

Despite the odds, Nigerians are finding ways to keep the Christmas spirit alive. Communities are coming together to share resources, and some families are opting for simpler, home-based celebrations. Religious institutions have also stepped in, offering free meals and organizing events to spread hope and cheer.

However, the strain is evident. “This is the toughest Christmas we’ve ever faced,” says Juliet, a single mother of one in Abuja. “We used to look forward to this season, but now it’s a time of anxiety and tears.”

While this year’s Christmas festivities which will climax with the New Year celebration may not be the joyous occasion Nigerians had hoped for, it serves as a stark reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit.

In the face of adversity, communities are leaning on each other, and voices are calling for change louder than ever before.

As the bells ring in the New Year, Nigerians hope for a brighter 2025, where the true essence of Christmas – love, generosity, and hope – can once again shine through.
