NIGERIA‘s education system is on the cusp of a revolution, following the development of a comprehensive curriculum overhaul spearheaded by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
The bold initiative, which aims to modernise teaching methodologies and aligning them with the demands of the 21st century, was disclosed by Prof. Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, NCCE’s Executive Secretary, at the international conference of the Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria (IELPN) International Conference At the recent Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria (IELPN) International Conference, held last week (August 14) in Abuja.
Prof. Okwelle, who delivered the keynote lecture, stressed the critical need for a robust educational system to drive national security and economic growth in today’s complex world, adding that the curriculum review is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which prioritises education reform.
Okwelle said towards this direction, the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has also introduced a four-point agenda focused on data acquisition, out-of-school children education, teacher capacity development, and skills enhancement.
The overhaul, he said, marks a significant shift from traditional teaching methods to innovative pedagogies, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-changing world, adding that by embracing modern teaching methodologies, Nigeria’s education system is poised to produce students who are better prepared to tackle the challenges of the future.
The IELPN conference highlighted the importance of educational leadership in driving this transformation while noting the contributions of educational leaders.
Among other highlights of the occasion was the decoration of Prof. Okwelle as a substantive fellow of the institute.
