THE BENUE State House of Assembly has approved the extension of the tenure of caretaker committees of the local government councils in Benue State for a period of six months.
Mr Tersoo Zamber, the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker of the House said the approval followed a letter sent by Governor Hyacinth Alia to the Assembly through the Speaker, Hon. Aondona Dajoh, which he read on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary.
Zamber said the letter indicated that the tenure of the current caretaker chairpersons “is scheduled to expire on the 5th of June, 2024 and the extension of the tenure of the caretaker chairmen will avail the State Independent Electoral Commission (BESIEC) enough time to prepare and conduct the local government council elections”.

According to the CPS, while some chairpersons enjoyed tenure extension, others were newly nominated. Below is the list:

2. Konshisha LGA: Hon. Philip Achuah (retained)
3. Ushongo LGA: Hon. Timothy Hembaor (replaces Hon. Alex Avakaa)
4. Katshina Ala Hon. Shaku Justine retained
5. Kwande LGA: Hon. Neji Vitalis Terhile (replaces Hon. Mark Tile)
6. Gboko LGA: Hon. Avar Verlumun (retained)
7. Tarka LGA: Hon. Roy Terna Ashirga (retained)
8. Buruku LGA: Hon. Agber Cephas (retained)
9. Makurdi LGA: Hon. James Dwem (retained)
10. Gwer East LGA: Hon. Mrs Comfort Agbo (retained)

There is confusion between Oju and Obi LGAs because Okoh Michael Otebe was the caretaker chairman of Oju before while Ire Orubi who was Obi caretaker chairman is now for Oju. How can one person be the caretaker chairman in two different LGAs except if she is serving as a DGSA
The nominated interim caretaker chairmen are to submit their curriculum vitae to the Assembly on or before Thursday this week for onward screening and confirmation.
