THE BENUE State Government has announced the adoption for the state the 9-3-4 system of education introduced by the Federal Ministry of Education.

Commissioner of Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management, Dr Frederick Ikyaan, announced this on Tuesday at Government College, Makurdi, at an expanded stakeholders of education meeting.

Rev. Ikyaan explained that the federal government has introduced the 9-3-4 system thereby putting an end to the 6-3-3-4 system that had been in place until now. This, he said, has halted the issuance of First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) upon finishing primary 6.

According to him, the ministry has decided to heed to the cries of primary school leavers concerning non-issuance of certificates and promised to clear the backlog before the commencement of the new system whereby only Basic 9 graduates will be issued certificate.

On the issue of school census, the commissioner stated that only last week, President Bola Tinubu gave the Federal Ministry of Education the mandate to carryout school census from primary to tertiary levels, including capturing of teachers which means Benue is already ahead in the right direction.

He commended the stakeholders for their cooperation and urged them to feel free to offer useful ideas and make necessary suggestions as the ministry is ready to welcome them and put them to use if found useful.

Giving more insight into the development, the Director General, Benue Quality Assurance Agency (BEQA), Dr Francis Terna, displayed the newly designed certificate, adding that it has security features to prevent forgery and other sharp practices while informing that same has been done nationwide.

In their separate responses, representatives of ANCOPSS, NAPPS, Mission schools, PTA and APSON all welcomed the idea and pledged their continuous support to any developmental program of the ministry but expressed reservation over constant costs.
