THE FEDERAL Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has set a minimum standard for all temporary motor park terminals and taxi ranks in the federal capital, Abuja.

Mr Wadata Bodinga, Director, Department of Traffic Management, Transportation Secretariat, FCTA, stated this when officials of the secretariat visited some of the terminals and taxi ranks in Abuja on Friday.

The Department of Road Transport Services and the Development Control had begun the demolition of illegal structures and shanties in taxi ranks and terminals.

Some of the taxi ranks already cleared included Area 1, Area 3, and Banex Junction Taxi Ranks, to ensure sanity and rid the ranks of criminal elements.

Bodinga explained that the visit was to remind the mangers of the terminals and taxi ranks of the need to ensure that the removed shanties and other illegal businesses within the terminals did not return.

He added that the exercise would continue until sanity and security returned to all the terminals and taxi ranks in the territory.

He explained that FCTA had concluded plans to ensure that all the motor terminals and temporary taxi ranks operated within a minimum acceptable standard.

He explained that based on the agreed minimum standard, all the terminals and taxi ranks were expected to provide office space, shelter pavilion for commuters, and standard toilet facilities.

Other requirements, according to Bodinga, include the provisions of mini marts, and proper lighting of the whole space, adding that the floor must be tarred, and the space fenced with removable materials.

He reminded the managers of the facilities that they were holding those spaces in trust for the government, stressing the need to maintain absolute sanity in them.

He urged the managers to key into the FCT Administration’s vision of developing a smart city. He added that new managers would be selected based on their capacities and managerial capabilities to develop and manage the facilities. (NAN)
