JOSEPH Ukpalichi, popularly known as ‘Joe Council’ by friends, is in a race against time as he battles a debilitating stroke that has left the right side of his body paralysed, impaired his speech, and partly affected his memory.
With doctors emphasising a 50/50 chance of survival, urgent financial intervention is required for further treatment that could save his life.
Struck in early October 2024, Ukpalichi was in coma for over a month at the Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja and the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja before he regained consciousness and subsequently discharged. The total bill for medical care at the two hospitals was over ₦10 million naira.
However, weeks after being discharged, he suffered a relapse, plunging him back into a critical state.
Doctors recommend physiotherapy to aid his recovery, but severe pain in his right hand and leg has impeded progress. A new medical option within Nigeria offers hope, but it requires at least ₦3 Million Naira to commence treatment.
An Interim Committee on Urgent Further Medical Intervention for Ukpalichi has been set up to rally support.
The committee, in a statement, while acknowledging the generous contributions that helped raised the over ₦10 million for the earlier treatment, is however appealing for further donations to secure Joseph’s survival, stressing that nothing is too small in the mission to save him.
